Job Description Summary
The MPTF Mechanical Systems Engineering team are responsible for delivering programmes of testing and supporting all mechanical engineering activities at the Marine Power Test Facility (MPTF).The Mechanical Systems Engineer is involved throughout the design, installation and commissioning of dedicated test-beds. You will use and develop your key skills, knowledge and practical experience to design and specify equipment and systems, create test scenarios, manage test operations, and solve problems, thereby supporting the delivery of class leading Power System solutions. The role provides a key technical expertise interface to the customer.
Is a sole UK National and holds, or is eligible to obtain, UK security clearance to SC level.
Due to the nature of the projects / customers etc: This role requires the successful candidate to work 5 days per week onsite with some flexibility
Job Description
In this role you will:
- Have the opportunity to work on one of the most unique power system design and test facilities in the world, supporting major UK infrastructure projects.
- Work closely with Customers, Suppliers, third-party stakeholders and multi-disciplinary colleagues, to drive engineering excellence and deep collaboration.
- Support or perform Power System vibration studies and analysis using simulation software, such as Dyrobes.
- Generate main and balance of plant equipment specifications, functional and test documents, for Generators, Motors, gearboxes, couplings, lubrication systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, auxiliaries, etc.
- Ensure System designs comply with requirements, relevant health & safety, international standards where applicable.
- Collaboratively produce clear and concise engineering documentation. Manage the engineering review cycle, and host and present technical meetings with domain experts.
- Provide technical input, to participate in commissioning, and to contribute to testing operations.
- Review and analyse data from multiple sources, prepare technical reports demonstrating validation and verification.
We are looking for a professional engineer who:
- Has a firm grasp of mechanical engineering concepts with applicable, transferrable equipment or systems level knowledge & experience, with ideally industrial, marine or naval defence domain experience.
- Can work in a multi-disciplinary team with a wide experience of integrating mechanical systems.
- Can work initiatively on challenges, problem solving, ambitious, highly motivated and driven to succeed with a lean mindset.
- Can take a practical approach to the design and implementation of test platforms.
- Has working knowledge of marine classification society, IEC, MIL or DEF standards.
- Has expertise in one or more of the following areas—diesel engines, electrical machines, fluid systems, vibration analysis, structural engineering are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrates a high focus on accuracy and quality of work with great attention to detail and excellent awareness of safety in the development of designs.
- Has experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD, or similar.
- Has a basic level of electrical engineering knowledge.
Qualification Requirements:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant subject, relevant experience would be beneficial.
- Is a sole UK National and holds, or is eligible to obtain, UK security clearance to SC level.
- Working towards or hold CEng qualification.
