Job Description

Do you want to help deliver the green energy transition through the control systems that support critical power transformer projects?

GE Vernova is looking for an exceptional Lead Controls Engineer to join our Electrification team based in Stafford, UK.

GE Vernova - The Energy to Change the World

With over 130 years of experience and proven innovation, GE Vernova is leading a new era of energy. We are electrifying the world while working to decarbonize it. Our name reflects our mission. “GE” carries a legacy of quality and ingenuity. “Ver” signals Earth’s lush ecosystems, while “Nova” nods to a new era of lower-carbon energy we are helping to deliver.

Focused on the future, GE Vernova is accelerating the shift to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. We help customers power economies and deliver electricity vital to health, safety, and quality of life.

Electrification

Our Electrification solutions modernize grids, enable renewable integration, and strengthen energy systems. From software to power conversion and storage, we help create smarter, more resilient energy networks.

Let’s Talk about the Role

As Lead Controls Engineer, you design low-voltage control schemes for power transformers, helping deliver reliable, high-quality solutions from engineering design through to manufacture and testing.

You create control schematics, specifications, and related documentation, support component selection and supplier review, and work closely with transformer components, control interfaces, and SCADA or central control systems. You also contribute to HMI development, support factory acceptance testing, and coordinate with colleagues and customers to help ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and to budget.

How You Will Make a Difference

  • Preparing control schematics, specifications, general arrangement drawings, and cable schedules for control cabinets for power transformers
  • Interfacing with relays, tap-changers, and other transformer components, as well as SCADA or central control systems
  • Developing HMI solutions and supporting programming activity where required
  • Selecting and specifying components for ordering and manufacturing
  • Reviewing supplier drawings and supporting factory acceptance tests
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders across projects, tendering, manufacturing, quality, procurement, and other functions
  • Maintaining strong performance against key delivery measures such as on-time delivery, right first time, and budget adherence
  • Supporting continuous improvement through safe, high-quality, and efficient engineering practice

Skills for Success

You are a hands-on, collaborative controls engineer who enjoys turning complex transformer requirements into practical, reliable engineering solutions.

  • The ability to design low-voltage control schemes for power transformers
  • The capability to prepare control schematics, specifications, and related engineering documentation independently
  • An understanding of low-voltage switchgear schematics and related automation
  • An understanding of transformer design (especially transformer design calculations, active part design including lead exits, insulation, windings, nesting of coils and tank design) and transformer design calculations is an advantage
  • An expertise in controls, electrical, or instrumentation engineering, or equivalent experience in power transformers
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical and a document management system such as Windchill or a similar platform
  • Experience with PLC programming or automation software is preferred, but not essential
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to coordinate with customers, suppliers, and internal teams
  • A focus on safety, quality, delivery, and cost, with a collaborative and accountable approach

A formal education and subsequent University Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field are nice to have, but we are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
