Job Description
Job Description Summary
Responsible for designing, developing, and validating embedded firmware for the wind turbine pitch system, which includes control boards, motor drive control, and backup charging systems tailored to the product platform. This role supports high-quality, reliable system performance and contributes to team success through requirements development, code reviews, and continuous improvement of engineering processes and ways of working.Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Architect, design, and develop embedded firmware for the wind turbine pitch control system, including control boards, motor drive systems, and backup charging systems.
- Design and implement robust control solutions for AC and DC motors, closed-loop control systems, and embedded communications interfaces such as UART/serial, SPI, and I2C.
- Write, compile, test, and debug firmware throughout the full product development lifecycle, from concept through validation and release.
- Develop, maintain, and use simulation models of the pitch system integrated with the full wind turbine to validate system behavior before deployment of hardware.
- Apply strong systems knowledge in motor controls, batteries, ultracapacitors, and electrical design, with an understanding of the interactions between position, speed, and current in complex electromechanical systems.
- Analyze and interpret electrical schematics, hardware interfaces, and control system behavior to support development and root cause investigations.
- Perform hands-on hardware debugging and validation in a high-voltage laboratory environment using equipment such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes, while adhering to all safety protocols.
- Lead or support validation testing of control software and hardware, including issue debugging, failure reproduction, and investigation of field-reported events.
- Review product requirements and technical specifications to ensure they are complete, clear, and testable, and provide recommendations that improve product quality and engineering processes.
- Collaborate cross-functionally across GE Vernova engineering teams to develop reliable, high-performing wind turbine systems and ensure successful system integration.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, sharing best practices, and supporting team capability growth.
- Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders, with the ability to connect detailed engineering work to broader system and business objectives.
- Demonstrate understanding of key business drivers and how team contributions support broader engineering goals, product outcomes, and the wind energy industry.
- Identify and apply AI-enabled tools and methods to improve engineering efficiency, quality, and ways of working.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in computer science or engineering
- 6 years of experience in firmware development including:
- Experience with C/C++, PLCs, computer architecture, and embedded or industrial networking (MS Visual Studio TFS)
- Strong background in electrical design, schematics, PCBA layout interpretation, and/or component specification
- Experience with motor control design, power electronics, and electrical/thermal considerations (MS Visual Studio TFS)
- Experience with automation, test-driven development, and engineering test frameworks (GitHub, DLL, MATLAB, Python)
