Within Product Service Engineering (PSE), our Fleet Engineering team’s mission is to keep the world’s lights on by diligently servicing our fleet of gas turbines, with an unwavering sense of urgency, quality, and innovation. Fleet Engineering closely ties together Services and GTE Design groups – we maintain high technical rigor while working with a sense of urgency our customers need.

The Lead Engineer - Mechanical Component will have technical ownership of HA, F, and other technologies, including Compressor blades, compressor & turbine rotors and casings. They will be responsible for delivering optimal solutions for our customers and will have a focus on SAFER cases, key root cause analysis (RCA) milestones, field issue resolutions – immediate and long-term solutions, ER subcases, services NCRs, perform hand calcs and detailed analyses, own select corrective/preventative actions (CAPA) redesigns, and lead fleet leader inspections.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality ER subcase resolution and design support for RCA investigations. Own/support and deliver RCA and CAPA actions on time to committed dates.
  • Conceive innovative ideas to solve Cold Section design problems.
  • Apply basic design fundamentals, leverage hand calcs, CAD, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models for analysis supporting RCAs and/or CAPA deliverables.
  • Conduct/Actively participate and contribute in technical reviews for design tasks with Controlled Title Holders (CTHs), following the documented NPI and RCA processes. Evaluate/support and mitigate component/system level risks.
  • Be a champion for Lean and continuous improvement. Develop standard work and identify creative ways to improve our processes and design methods.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Gas Turbine Engineering (GTE) teams. Keep abreast of New Technology Introduction (NTI) and New Product Introduction (NPI) designs which will be fielded soon.
  • Drive technical rigor and integrity in all aspects of design and post-design work.
  • Apply knowledge of gas turbine design and systems to implement field solutions which enhance durability, reliability, repairability, performance, operational flexibility, emissions, and value.
  • As appropriate, support outages, lab tests, and associated data-processing.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams including PSE/CSE, Field Services, Controlled Title Holders, Systems, Operability, Performance, Reliability, MYA, Heat Transfer, GTE Design, Controls, Accessories, PDE, Materials, Global Supply Chain, Quality, and Repair.
  • Broadening knowledge of own technical discipline to execute policy/strategy. May include support roles with specialized technical field of knowledge; still acquiring higher level knowledge and skills.
  • May have some autonomy to make decisions within a defined framework. Resolves issues in situations that require good technical knowledge and judgment within established procedures. Consults more senior team members for issues outside of defined instructions/parameters.
  • Support & involvement in broad company-wide initiatives in support of GE Gas Power business objectives (i.e. Value Engineering, Lean and Problem Solving)

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s or bachelor’s in engineering with specialization in Mechanical, Design and Applied mechanics.
  • 6+ years of Gas Turbine engineering experience
  • Demonstrated team-work skills and Self-starter
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Desired Characteristics

  • Relevant experience designing, servicing, or testing gas turbine hardware.
  • Advanced engineering degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Proficient with ANSYS, NX, and other analytical tools.
  • Understanding of GD&T and ability to interpret engineering drawings & BOMs.
  • Strong organizational & communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capability in collaborating in a matrixed global organization.
  • Humble, open, and a continuous learner. Able to collaborate across global teams.
  • Familiar with TOPS 8D or other Root Cause techniques.
  • Ability to rapidly change directions for multiple concurrent projects based on emergent business priorities.
