Job Description Summary

As a Principal Engineer in the Mechanical Systems and Design Laboratory, you will be a preeminent technical leader responsible for the strategy, design, and development of advanced mechanical components and systems. You will lead multi-disciplinary teams to transition high-impact technologies from concept to product implementation across the GE Vernova portfolio, including Power, Wind, and Grid.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conceptual or theoretical activities related to the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Includes the analysis of static (structural) and dynamic (rotordynamics, vibrations) behaviour of mechanical systems
  • As a senior technical leader, you will lead and contribute to the planning, development, and transition of mechanical technologies from concept to products for GE Vernova internal and external clients.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams in the development of next-generation product platforms, driving innovation in mechanical systems and advanced manufacturing.
  • Oversee the design, analysis, and testing of complex machinery components and systems, ensuring rigorous validation and seamless product implementation.
  • Drive technology roadmapping and competitive assessments to define future research initiatives and new technology programs.
  • Lead the development of new project proposals for GE businesses as well as government agencies (e.g., DOE, DOD), fostering external collaborations and securing R&D funding.
  • Innovate in the mechanical systems space and lead Intellectual Property development, strategy, and portfolio reviews.
  • Responsible for the design, analysis, and testing of machinery components and systems including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, validation, and product implementation.
  • Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction across the organization to grow overall technical capability; provide high-level coaching and mentoring to senior and staff engineers.
  • Serve as a bridge to the latest industry and university trends, ensuring GE Vernova remains at the cutting edge of mechanical and mechatronic systems.
  • Chair and participate in critical project and technical reviews, providing the expertise required to resolve complex technical challenges across the global organization.
  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design with a minimum of 10 years of industrial experience OR MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Applied Mechanics in rotating machinery and/or rotating components design and a minimum of 15 years of industrial experience
  • Expertise with the design, analysis (including finite element analysis) and testing of structural components.
  • Experience in conceiving, developing, and carrying out experiments in component hardware and transferring component level tests into full scale hardware solutions.
  • Proficiency using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo), finite element analysis using different tools (ANSYS/ABAQUS, etc), numerical computation tools (MATLAB, Python, etc).
  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques and material processing selections in machines.
  • Experience in conceptual design, build up and validation of full scale rotating machinery incorporating new or experimental technology.
  • Experience in conceiving, developing and carrying out experiments in rotating component hardware and transferring component level tests into full scale hardware solutions.
  • Interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.
  • Execution mindset and sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Desired Characteristics

  • Gearbox design experience.
  • Rotor and support structural design experience.
  • System modeling - Coupling of thermal & structural analyses.
  • Experience with materials and manufacturing techniques used in rotating components including alloys and coatings as well as grinding, finishing and hardening methods; Experience in design, design-for-manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and/or CNC machining
  • Conduct and support applied research in conventional and advanced  manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing with DMLM, Binder Jet, and other modalities.
  • Experience in rotating machine design in the power generation, propulsion and/or oil and gas sectors
  • Experience with the design, analysis and testing of rolling element bearing including computational tools and design standards used in the design of rolling element bearings and other rotating components.
  • Must be able to take ownership of issues and drive solutions
  • Deep experience in power generation, propulsion, or oil and gas sectors.
  • Proven track record of leading large teams to deliver on business priorities while managing conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence C-suite technical leadership.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $131,700.00 and $219,300.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.
