Job Description Summary

As a GE Vernova accelerator, GE Vernova Advanced Research is driving strategy and leading research & development efforts to execute on the business’s mission to help power the energy transition. We forge the collaborations and help invent the technologies required to boost energy dominance of the United States.

Representing virtually every major scientific and engineering discipline, our researchers are collaborating with GE Vernova’s businesses, the U.S. Government, and more than 420 entities at the forefront of technology to execute on 150+ energy-focused projects. Collectively, these research programs and initiatives aim to solve near term technical challenges, deliver next generation product advances, and drive long term breakthrough innovation to enable more affordable, reliable, sustainable, distributed, and secure energy.

The Electrical Systems team at GE Vernova Advanced Research is seeking candidates interested in the research and development of advanced gas and physical sensor systems and their integration into industrial and consumer products. As a Research Engineer, you will work closely with a highly experienced, multidisciplinary team to advance sensing technologies for a broad range of customers.

The primary focus of this role is the design, development, and testing of sensor subsystems, including (i) transducers, (ii) multi‑output signal interrogators, and (iii) multivariate data analytics. These subsystems will be integrated into next‑generation gas and physical sensor systems to enable new and enhanced performance capabilities across diverse applications.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

The Research Engineer – Sensor Systems and Multivariate Data Analytics will develop advanced sensor system technologies spanning transducers, signal interrogation, and multivariate data analytics. The role bridges fundamental research and applied system development to deliver low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) sensing solutions for diverse industrial and governmental applications.

  • Lead the design and development of innovative sensor systems, including transducers, signal interrogation architectures, and data analytics for gas and physical sensing applications, with an emphasis on low SWaP solutions.

  • Contribute across the full sensor system research and development lifecycle, including fundamental innovation, requirements definition, project planning, specifications, system design, experimental validation, and interpretation of results.

  • Plan, execute, and analyze critical experiments to validate sensor system concepts, and communicate technical findings and project status to senior management and key stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary internal teams and external industrial, academic, and government partners to develop system‑level sensing solutions.

  • Engage directly with customers to understand application needs, develop tailored sensor system solutions, and identify future technology and business opportunities.

  • Develop and present research plans and proposals for internal programs and external funding agencies; disseminate research outcomes through conferences, peer‑reviewed publications, and technical networks.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline

  • Demonstrated experience designing and testing gas or/and physical sensor structures and devices and the ability to design key sensing components such as transducers and to combine them with needed sensing materials and signal interrogators or to apply direct spectroscopic measurements

  • Demonstrated experience in data analytics – univariate and multivariate – for sensor applications

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required

  • Because of the specific categories of data handled by GE Vernova Advanced Research and the structure of our work environment, we are unable to accommodate employment of persons while they are considered nationals of countries subject to comprehensive restrictions under the US Export Administration Regulations (EAR), 15 CFR Section 746 et seq. Please note that citizens of these countries who have either “U.S. person” status under U.S. export control laws or subsequent citizenship or permanent residency from a non-restricted country can be considered.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY

Desired Characteristics

  • Demonstrated design of sensors based on different transduction principles such as electrical, optical, mechanical, thermal

  • Demonstrated design of wired and/or wireless sensors

  • Demonstrated understanding of synergism between sensor design and associated data analytics (machine learning) of sensor outputs

  • Familiarization of manufacturing principles of designed sensor systems

  • Demonstrated ability to work in sensors laboratories and conduct critical experiments

  • Demonstrated ability to develop experimental methods for testing sensor system components and whole system

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team

  • Excellent presentation, speaking, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
