Job Description Summary

As Valve Converter Mechanical Team Lead, you will report to the Head of Valve Converter Engineering within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on tender and project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.

The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to expand their leadership skills and professional development. Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be international travel opportunities to collaborate with other GE units, test laboratories, customers and project sites.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule the teams work and define priorities.
  • Perform people reviews;
  • Manage people development through knowledge sharing and mentoring and training.
  • Forecast the upcoming work for the team;
  • Effectively communicates technical issues throughout the organization; Uses contemporary communication tools to share across Engineering and business silos.
  • Ensure engineering processes and best practise is followed and correct auditable documentation is created;
  • Ensure engineering product is delivered with the correct quality levels for the client and the marketplace;
  • Collate and report teams KPI’s;
  • Review and approve key technical documentation;
  • Lead team in solving challenging technical issues;
  • Ensure that the tender and project deliverables for the Valve Converter Mechanical Team is correctly managed and delivered according to plan and budget;
  • Lead work on completing technical requirements specifications to solve project issues;
  • Proactive interaction with other engineering departments for product definition (System design, Valve Converter Electrical, Main Scheme, Layout and Commercial for example);
  • Ability to, where required, make independent decisions;
  • Ensure that work performed considers applicable international standards and policies
  • Foster an environment of knowledge sharing and mentoring within the team;

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level in sciences or equivalent degree. Mechanical Engineering background.
  • Proven experience of the design and/or development of power electronic converters (preferably at high power >1MVA) is preferred.
  • Candidates with an understanding of the HVDC Valve Converter covering both LCC and VSC technology is preferred.
  • Experience of management of an engineering team.
  • Experience of management of technical issues with client and contract is preferred.

Required Characteristics:

  • Prior experience of electrical transmission industry
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Take a pro-active approach to ensuring Health & Safety is paramount, including conducting Risk Assessments
  • Industrialisation and supply chain integration
  • Specification & report checking and approving
  • Requirements capture
  • EHS compliance ability
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organisation skills

Desired Characteristics:

  • Wide overall knowledge of an HVDC converter design, testing and installation
  • Mechanical design exposure
  • Thermal and hydraulic design (e.g. loss temperature calculations, thermal modelling, thermal characteristics of material, pressure drop calculations)
  • Intellectual property and the patent process experience
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a large group of multi-discipline engineers
  • Good at sharing knowledge and experience
